How do I fix a 3 ringed xbox that has already been fixed before?

My Xbox 360’s been fixed with X-clamp fix and now has the 3 red light error code 0102. penny trick doesnt work and I have tried adding thermal paste already. Anybody know what I should look for or try next? I hope it’s not a dud.
Please note, it was fixed with the X-clamp fix. I cleaned off the GPU and CPU, added a new layer of thermal paste, and then used the penny trick. I used the towel trick with the pennies in it because sometimes I need only do that ONCE and the unit works but this one is a tad different and as I stated it gives me the error code listed above.
I have done the towel trick multiple times but no luck but I don’t intend to overdo it. I’m not looking to see if there is maybe something I misssed or other solutions related to that error in general

My girlfriend loves my single-minded dedication to xboxing – NOT!

There is almost nothing she can do to divert my attention when in mid game. I know this is wrong, but it’s just me. But if you thrash your xbox with continuous play your eventually likely to cook it to death.

Xbox Red Rings of Death!

I’d given my xbox three red rings, and so was now in search of a xbox three red lights fix.

I tried the usual hope for the best fix’s, let it cool, disconnected all the leads and restarted it again…

Unfortunately I definitely needed an xbox three red lights fix – but which one there are so many to choose from?

I knew from my mate Steve who fixes xbox’s that this was a heat related problem, and simple to repair (for him that is!).
Explaining that there are 2 solutions to consider:-

A full removal of the faulty xbox x clamps
A part-solution where you “support” the x clamps to prevent them bending when hot.

A full xbox three red lights fix requires far more work removing the x clamps and cleaning and replacing the thermal paste that conducts the heat form the overheating processors out of the xbox through the two heatsinks. You don’t need any special tools (small screwdriver and a flat head screwdriver, and occasionally pliers), but you do have to take everything apart.
A partial xbox three red lights fix, doesn’t require taking it all apart, as it “supports” the x clamps to prevent them bending when heated. Also known as the “xbox penny fix”, as it uses pennies insulted with electrical tape to form the “support”. This fix is good if you “feel” you’re xbox isn’t too badly damaged by heat.

Anyway long story short – the whole xbox repair thing turned out to be far easier than I thought it would be.

Xbox X Clamps Fix

When considering an xbox x clamp fix I believe you have two main options

A full xbox clamp fix – Take xbox box and motherboard apart remove, x clamps, and heatsinks, replace x clamps with new screws and washers, clean up old thermal paste and replace with new, rebuild, heat and allow to reset.
Semi xbox x clamp fix or xbox penny fix as it’s otherwise known – rather than removing those pesky x clamps – pad them with pennies insulated in electrical tape – this prevents the x clamps bending as they get hot, and MIGHT solve your problem.

For my first experience of an xbox x clamp fix, I opted for option 1, but this was mainly because I’ve got a mate who fixes xbox for money, and he’d given me the screws, washes and thermal paste ready for such an time as I’d need them.
But because he was away when my xbox 360 RROD’d (red rings of death), I bought a xbox x clamp fix repair guide to follow, which at the time cost me $30, but was super easy to follow, and got me xboxing again in under 2 hours.

However since loosing my xbox 360 repair “cherry”, I’ve since helped Steve repair a small number of xbox’s for mates, and have tried the other xbox x clamp fix method as a first step repair, with the intention of moving on to the better and permanent method 1 fix if method 2 failed.

However so far method 2 above has worked real well – though I’ve probably been lucky that the consoles I’ve worked on have not been TOTALLY cooked.

Red Light Xbox Fix – Thanks to Microsoft’s poor motherboard design, the otherwise brilliant xbox 360 is almost certain to try your patience with one of many heat related problems known as the “Red Rings of Death” or “RROD”

And if you’re reading this you’re probably already affected or soon will be!
There is now a ton of information regarding the red light xbox fix available on line, some of it free and some not. This article considers the various DIY fix’s available.

So what’s the best red light xbox fix?

Well firstly you have to find out if your xbox is in warranty; if so you have the option of letting Microsoft repair it for you (though you will have to wait a few weeks to get it back).
If out of warranty you can now either:-

Send it back to Microsoft and pay for the fix $140
Pay someone else to repair it $70 or more
Or take on a red light xbox fix yourself.

Possible red light fix options in order of simplicity:-
Infamous xbox 360 towel fix – Not for the feint heated this one. Cook your xbox in an oven of towels for 25 minutes, hoping the xbox solder connections re-connect. P

poor execution of this fix could lead to a visit from the fire services, and possibly homelessness!

Not recommended.
All other fixes require opening of the xbox 360 and will void any warranty.

They then break down into two types of fix, those that replace the x-clamps (hold the heat sinks to the motherboard), and those that support the motherboard to stop it bending when it heats up instead.
Xbox 360 penny fix – Requires you to open the xbox, and rather than replace the x-clamps (which can be fiddly and require the use of thermal paste), suggests a technique for better supporting the motherboard using pennies and electrical tape.
This works for many and requires no special tools or thermal paste.
Replacing the x- clamps – This is the best solution as the x-clamps are the root of the problem, but may require the use of thermal past ($12), and may take a little longer.
There are now many DIY red light xbox fix guides available for under $35 (most are $29) that take you through the process step by step in high quality video form.
