Xbox Game Downloads
Xbox game downloads are all the rage nowadays. The reason for this is quite simple: the Xbox 360 is a very versatile piece of equipment. It allows for playing games with superior graphics and the ability to have your friends join in on the action with you.
However If you are regularly buying Xbox 360 games then you are probably spending a fortune of your hard earned money. All too often you will buy an Xbox 360 game and finish it very quickly, which makes you feel that you have been had.
So if like me you look for an alternative to buying game after game…
And this brings you to the interesting subject of downloading your xbox games.
Firstly it’s illegal to download copyright material.
So I guess you have to ask yourself do you want to learn some form of “dark art”, or “superpower” that can be used for good, or evil.
Because we’re now entering, cue the spooky music, the world of…
Peer to peer file sharing or p2p.
To use the Wikipedia definition “A peer-to-peer distributed network architecture is composed of participants that make a portion of their resources (such as processing power, disk storage or network bandwidth) directly available to other network participants, without the need for central coordination instances (such as servers or stable hosts). Peers are both suppliers and consumers of resources, in contrast to the traditional client-server model where only servers supply, and clients consume.”
P2P has a pretty bad rep, mostly due to the focus on the copyright, porn, or virus / trojan saturated content that is common place. There really is some seriously bad shit out there.
But can you download xbox 360 games without infecting your PC, or seeing someone being overly loving with their pet Alsatian?
The answer is yes, but like entering any jungle you’ll need a map or guide, and some other stuff to keep you safe!
At this point I’m going to stop, to say that though the rest of the article will map out all the stuff you’ll need. I’m mostly going to link to sources of information, as my technical skills are best summed up as “reluctant”.
So in shopping list style you’re going to have to have or get:-
1. Up to date security software on your computer.
2. A P2P client app running on your PC these are often free and aren’t scary at all. This is for searching for all the files that are available.
3. File zipping and unzipping application like winzip. If you haven’t got one you can get free ones easily. (I use JZip which you can get here for Free).
4. You’ll to need to flash or modify the firmware in your DVD so that it will play the downloaded and burned disks (RW dual layer DVD) containing your xbox 360 games. This is easy and requires no special tools.
5. A game ripping and burning application.
6. You’ll also need an application to either check that your game contains or burn your games with something called a “stealth patch” like a nicotine patch helps you stop smoking, a stealth patch stops you getting banned from xbox live.
7. Good quality dual layer DVD writable media.
Now if you’ve got the time and are quite comfortable with technical stuff you can go to the after dawn forum and get their free tutorial and put all this stuff together yourself at no cost. After Dawn is a trustworthy forum / source of great technical help, and they do try and keep it easy for simpletons like me.
Unfortunately I’m not technically motivated to do all this, I bought a guide which told me what to do, I did it, and that was that.
All I would say is that the guide I bought was really nothing more than a collection of FREELY available internet resources, all wrapped up with a pretty front end, detailed instructions, and video examples.
The guide cost me about $35 bucks, but I doubt I would have been able to find all the stuff myself, before loosing the will to live!
So for someone like me who’d rather be spending my time xboxing, than hunting round the internet, the $35 was well spent.
