Red Light Xbox Fix
Red Light Xbox Fix – Thanks to Microsoft’s poor motherboard design, the otherwise brilliant xbox 360 is almost certain to try your patience with one of many heat related problems known as the “Red Rings of Death” or “RROD”
And if you’re reading this you’re probably already affected or soon will be!
There is now a ton of information regarding the red light xbox fix available on line, some of it free and some not. This article considers the various DIY fix’s available.
So what’s the best red light xbox fix?
Well firstly you have to find out if your xbox is in warranty; if so you have the option of letting Microsoft repair it for you (though you will have to wait a few weeks to get it back).
If out of warranty you can now either:-
- Send it back to Microsoft and pay for the fix $140
- Pay someone else to repair it $70 or more
- Or take on a red light xbox fix yourself.
Possible red light fix options in order of simplicity:-
Infamous xbox 360 towel fix – Not for the feint heated this one. Cook your xbox in an oven of towels for 25 minutes, hoping the xbox solder connections re-connect. P
poor execution of this fix could lead to a visit from the fire services, and possibly homelessness!
Not recommended.
All other fixes require opening of the xbox 360 and will void any warranty.
They then break down into two types of fix, those that replace the x-clamps (hold the heat sinks to the motherboard), and those that support the motherboard to stop it bending when it heats up instead.
Xbox 360 penny fix – Requires you to open the xbox, and rather than replace the x-clamps (which can be fiddly and require the use of thermal paste), suggests a technique for better supporting the motherboard using pennies and electrical tape.
This works for many and requires no special tools or thermal paste.
Replacing the x- clamps – This is the best solution as the x-clamps are the root of the problem, but may require the use of thermal past ($12), and may take a little longer.
There are now many DIY red light xbox fix guides available for under $35 (most are $29) that take you through the process step by step in high quality video form. The process is simple enough if you’re careful; I learnt using one of these services and got free game back up / ripping software as a bonus for buying the guide!
Once you get your xbox back to life, do ensure that it has good ventilation, and never leave the xbox plugged in when unattended for long periods.
