Ring Of Death Xbox Fix
Right from its launch the Xbox 360 has had heat related problems causing the RROD (red rings of death). 90% of all RROD can be traced to poor GPU & CPU contact to the heatsink and also poor joining between the two (thermal grease or thermal paste). The design flaw of the x-clamps that hold the CPU to the heatsink cause all this. Being made of soft metal the x-clamps bend under pressure and heat, and bend the motherboard with them. So breaking the contact with CPU & GPU and causing the RROD.
It really Hacks me off to think Microsoft have done so little to solve this problem in an otherwise awesome console.
However this problem can be resolved permanently by removing the x-clamps, and yes with a little care this can be done by you at home.
The Ring of Death Xbox fix process is as follows:-
1. Open the console
2. Remove the fan shroud and fan
3. Remove the DVD player.
4. Remove the power button and motherboard
5. Remove the X-Clamps
6. Remove the Heat Sinks
7. Clean up the old thermal paste
8. Put new thermal paste on the CPU and GPU
9. Re-install the heat sinks, motherboard, DVD Player and overheat
10. Re-install the fan and put the console back together
The Ring of Death Xbox fix tools and components required:-
Standard Size Phillips Screwdriver
Small Pliers or Vice Grips
32 Washers. 16 Nylon, and 16 Steel. Plus 8 Screws
Thermal Paste – Arctic Silver 5 is good one ($10-15 hardware / pc stores or off the Internet)
Torx Screwdriver with Size T9 and T10 Bits –
Q-tips or Other Cotton Swabs and 1 Paper Towel
Cleaner to remove old Thermal Paste (Fragrance free nail polish remover will do the job)
