So presuming your xbox has crashed or frozen in some way, and hasn’t responded to any of the basic steps to return it to life.
Your out of warranty or don’t want to wait whilst you send it for repair.
You’ve heard of this mysterious xbox 360 towel fix and want to give it a try.
Before explaining what it is and how it can work…
WARNING This is a potentially very dangerous (burn your house down dangerous) technique that I do not recommend.
Having said all that there is now so much “noise” about this technique, that I figure the best approach is to point out the most responsible approach to the xbox 360 towel fix.
Firstly a quick explanation of the problem and how the xbox 360 towel trick can temporarily help.
The problem is the xbox 360 was never built with sufficient fans to deal with the extreme heat the console generates. Even if your careful to allow ventilation prolonged playing of graphics intense games generates “cook your diner levels of heat“.
So much so that it bends the x-clamps that are used in the console to hold the heat sinks to the motherboard, this in turn distorts the motherboard breaks the connections / solder points, and causes most of the red light E74 errors that plague the xbox.
The theory with the xbox 360 towel fix is to heat the xbox quickly to the point where the solder heats sufficiently (but not so hot as to bend the x-clamps again) to reconnect any broken solder points when allowed to cool.

Please note even if the 360 towel trick works for you the repair will only be temporary, unless you seriously improve ventilation for your xbox.
My recommendation would be to fix the problem permanently by following one of the video fix guides, and replace / support the x-clamps, which are the root of the problem.
